3 Ways to Stand Firm While Others Fire Arrows

You’re so strong she says to me in a weird voice, like I’m some kind of nature’s freak.

Yeah, everyone is strong until they aren’t. Everyone does well in life until they don’t.

But when the arrows start coming – the hard things in life…the character assignations…the conflict with family over faith…the strong better be not be caught resting on human laurels.

It will take feet firmly planted. A standing firm in a Jesus strong kind of a way.

If you want to know how a person gets strong, don’t look at their DNA. That kind of strong will only take us so far. Look, instead, at what kind of shoes they are wearing – spiritual shoes, meant to endure the combat of a life and death battle for keeps. Well, at least that’s what Ephesians 6:10-12 calls it (Look it up in the Message translation later. You’ll see.).

Those standing firm while other fire arrows will be wearing the warrior boots.

Warrior Boots of Standard

We stand firm when we know what we believe and we tell the truth (to ourselves and others). I’ve come to realize lately, with all the noise on social media, that there is a vast difference between giving opinion and truly knowing what we believe. Many words do not equal depth of conviction. I wonder if all of our loud opinions aren’t, in fact, a cover for a lack of groundedness in what we truly believe. We stand firm, too, when we raise our standard of truth in our life. Complete and total truth, first to ourselves. We can’t be strong if we aren’t free. And we will never be free if we aren’t honest with ourselves. There is no life like a life of a clean conscience. This is the standing firm life.

Warrior Boots of Strength

When we rise up and go on record for our faith, people can fire arrows but our witness emboldens us to withstand them, through the help of God. Action leads to strength and that strength then leads to more action. Warrior boot wearers won’t settle for a passive faith. It is the active faith, the bold faith, that qualifies the Jesus follower to stand firm in the face of difficult times without wavering. This is the Jesus strong life we all crave.

Warrior Boots of Trust

There’s no way to stand firm in this life without trusting God, completely. We know this, but at some point in the process, it often breaks down. Trust is not just something we fall into or happen upon. It’s a choice. We choose God. We choose to trust Him over the way we feel. We choose to believe what He says and set aside what we see that might look different. We decide to follow Him for the rest of our life, no matter who or what or when or how. Trust is more than just an intention. It is a life-long follow through.

Life is tough and arrows headed our way are a sure thing.

But we can stand firm in the face of them.

We just have to be wearing the right kind of boots.

What We Most Need to Know About the Life We Live Now

Spoiler alert: The life we live now is not our best life.

No matter the pitch and hype speech, and despite the fact we can and should live the best life we possibly can while we are here (this I believe with my whole heart and why I would even write any of my books, I mean, really)…the earth life will never be our best life. The end.

Our real best life is the one we will have with Jesus in heaven.

But if we are reading this now, we are not yet there. So while we are still here, there are some things I think we need to know.

  1. We are not alone.
  2. We desperately need Jesus.
  3. We don’t have to feel ready to walk through this life strong.

I can’t say it better than what I already said in Put Your Warrior Boots On, Chapter 8, I Am Ready

“We’re doing great things, you and me. Doing hard things. Doing things we aren’t proud of (and some we really, really are). We’re loving people well and sometimes treating people less than. Losing our temper, forgetting to take hold of the battle for our mind and watching it slip from us. We’re making progress and then falling back and feeling worse. We’re crazy broken every day, but still holding on to hope in our core because Jesus.

We’re eating food that makes us happy and carrying the weight that makes us sad. We’re ending community over the table, which is the forgotten best thing, and oh, those consuming cell phones. We have pets we love and gardens we tend and places we drive and meals we cook and laundry we wash and schools and jobs we go to.

We have private pains in our hearts over loves who’ve gone to heaven and people who hurt us here on earth. We have broken relationships and friends who get it and send the text just in time.

We’re doing well with God and then before we mean to, leaving God out of things completely. Praying like mad or going days without prayer at all. We have worries, so many, even when we know we shouldn’t. We have bursts of faith that surprise us.

We have weak bodies, strong bodies, old bodies we don’t recognize anymore. We’re winning things, losing things, holding on to things too long, and letting go of things too soon. We’re crying because we are sad, crying because something turned out better than we hoped.

This is the life we live now.

One day we will start our real best life and all get better.

My friends, sorting through this hard and beautiful and imperfect life means we are human and we are not yet with Jesus. It doesn’t mean we aren’t ready to walk Jesus strong, despite the world’s mess. For the believer in Jesus Christ, we are ready, right now, through the imperfect, despite ourselves. Now is the time to lace up the boots and walk strong. We have important things to get done.

This is really the deal of life: not feeling ready but choosing to walk anyway; important things needing to get done that will require us going ahead by the power of God. As believers in Christ, it is how our whole life will be. So the good news is we can stop wasting time wishing for the magical moment we feel ready to take life on—to put on the warrior boots and walk strong. Life with the reality that our feelings never dictate what we do is a foreign concept to most of us, but it’s the way of holy release.

Jesus never asks us to feel ready; He asks us to be ready. His way is readiness of the mind, heart, and soul.

I don’t know the circumstances in your life that make you feel not ready. I suspect they are truly hard, likely some harder than mine. I won’t pretend to have the pat answer to help your particular heart pain feel better—there are things so dark and hard in this world that only God knows the depth. I won’t throw out Christian clichés and ask you to just trust God because it sounds good. I ask you to trust God because there is no other option.

What I can tell you today is that our circumstances do not need to be made right for us to walk this life out strong. We don’t need to understand them or make them make sense. Most of us have tried this route and wound up in exhaustion. We don’t need to brave ourselves into ready because brave is off the table. We just have to make the decision right now that walking Jesus strong in warrior boots is what we want and living the life declarations we’ve talked about is what we will do. We need no other information to make this decision than what we already know.

Because of Jesus, no matter what, you’ve got this…I’ve got this… even when we feel like we don’t. Even in our weakness, there is work to be done. We are ready to walk in warrior boots because we choose to walk this life out strong. We determine in our hearts that it will not be about the circumstances, but the commitments. These are things a health crisis cannot change. These are things even the deepest, darkest of loss cannot take from us. These are things by the help of the Holy Spirit we can fully be and do.

I’m praying for you today, that Jesus will come near—that He will persuade you by the power of the Holy Spirit that He has created you to walk strong, once and for all. I believe this, to my core. You aren’t ready for this and neither am I, but we are. Not because we have rallied ourselves to death or taken the “how to survive hard things” class at church or even because we have read this book. Because God. Because the Bible, which is everything we need for life and godliness. Everything. Every thing. God knew your hard last year. He knew your dark hole. He knew you could walk strong anyway.

So then, what to do in our limited, don’t feel ready life? Go on anyway. Look at God anyway. Don’t feel; believe.”

Enough said.

I love you, warrior in the making. I love Jesus most.

Always His,

When You Don’t Feel You’re Able, But You Are

I go on all the podcasts and they ask me the same thing: what would you say to your 20 year old self?

And I think long and hard about this blog and what I want to say to you now and to me, too, since we are all alike even though we claim we are so very different.

And I know: it’s words not just for the 20 year old me or you but the 40 year old me and you and the 50 year old and 60 year old and truth be known, the 15, 32 year old and 75 year old, too.

We all need to know the same thing as we walk through this crazy hard world.

That we are able, even though so often, we think we are not.

So maybe you’ll indulge me a few words to my right now self, since we are alike and all…so that means they’ll be for you, too…

Yes, Lisa, you are able.

I know you don’t feel like it, today. Truth be known, that last email about did you in – you know, the one with the bad news? It’s crummy, hearing hard things. Makes even a determined person feel like seeking the refuge of the dark closet.

On that subject…oh, what people do not know. That it doesn’t really matter how God knit a person together in the womb when it comes to the scary of the world. No one is tough enough to fight the human fear from mere genes and chromosomes. Personality type doesn’t qualify or disqualify from Jesus strong, thank God. I wish people would stop saying things like, “well, it’s easier for you” since we know good and well it’s not true. Sometimes outward grit just better hides the pile of inward angst.

I know that when you woke up after falling asleep on that airplane some months back, in what some people might call a panic attack, you felt fear grip you like never before – like your kids were going to die and you wouldn’t be able to protect them. I know that isn’t the first time that’s happened – mostly it happens in the dark of the night in your bed and you wake up in a sweat and Satan laughs at you and all you can really do is pray Jesus’ name over and over again until the terror passes.

Yeah, the world is crazy, no doubt about that. The other shoe is going to drop for sure, and that’s not being negative. So what are you going to do about it – sit and cry and panic? It doesn’t seem like a very good solution. It doesn’t feel like a good way to live. Won’t that rob that everyday joy? Won’t that keep you holding on too tight to kids that really belong to God…keep you from living the full, beautiful life God intended for you? Cocoons are for caterpillars and bubbles are for gum. Life is not meant to be stuffed in a box taped up by human hands under the illusion of control.

No, what you really want is to live strong. You don’t want weak faith – you want sure, steady, fortified faith that lasts until the end. You watched your daddy take his last breath and that’s a holy thing too big for words. In that moment you saw for yourself that earth things aren’t worth it if they aren’t attached to heaven things. You don’t want the panic life you pass on to your kids. You want the prepared life they take on as a heritage of strength to last long after you are gone. You don’t want to be swayed by the culture, confused by the mixed messages of the world, or live a life of half-truth. No. You want freedom in the Jesus only way. You want thick and abiding trust. You want Jesus strong, not human brave with an expiration date attached to it.

So don’t trust how you feel. Trust what you believe about God. Is He the authority of this world? Did He adopt you as His child? Has He made promises about the strength you can walk in despite this world and can He break promises? Then put on those warrior boots and stop living below your potential. It’s time. You are called to live the legacy of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is nothing else to do but to do just that.

You are able. You ARE able.

By the power of the Holy Spirit. Under the covering and authority of God.

So sister, warrior up.

PS: OH MY FRIENDS. I have something so special, so close to my heart I am going to share with you on Thursday. Please stay tuned and GET READY. It’s something I’ve never done before but something I found to be one of the most powerful things I’ve ever done in my life. I pray and trust it will be powerful for you, too, and for people all over this world. Let us boldly proclaim the name of Jesus, together, my warrior friends…it is time to rise to our spiritual potential and walk in the authority that is ours. Jesus Strong!

The 1st Step to Becoming a Jesus Warrior

The drill is a familiar one.

Get up, do the day, go to bed, and start over, again.

If it weren’t for the human, life would be perfect.

But instead, the projects stay half done, the relationships remain fractured, the feelings of being overwhelmed and half-baked and over it simmer just beneath the surface to the point that sleep seems to be the only relief from the days that don’t go the way we have planned. Trouble is, lots of can’t even sleep anymore.

So we get clever and think things up to help ourselves get better.

  • I just need to learn to clean my house better. If I just do that, I’ll finally be ok.
  • If I could only learn to control my tongue. Yes, that’s the key to my happiness.
  • If I will learn how to finally say no to people, then I will finally be at the place where I can rest and have peace.

We go on a quest to solve the certain things, only to find in the end that our human didn’t go away and neither did our daily struggle.

Turns out, smokescreen issues never solve the nagging God problems inside.

Before you bring out the protest posters, please hear this: yes, I think we should work on things that hinder us as a person, and maybe that includes becoming a better housekeeper. Certainly, if nothing else, it makes our housemates a whole lot happier and us better able to find something when it’s not buried beneath a pile.

But most surface things have hidden struggles at the core.

The truth is, many of us have wandered around for years, begging for scraps and glimpses of hope, in a stale relationship with God, filling our deep hunger pains with the wrong food, treating smokescreen issues as is they were the core problem.

Were we to choose, instead, to pursue a strong, passionate relationship with God, once and for all, a myriad of our problems would all fall away.

Because the priority of God brings order to the chaos of our lives.

I’ve watched it happen in my own life, heard testimony about it from the lives of others. Where once, relationships were in disarray and when trying to solve the relationship ourselves, it never worked. But once the relationship with God was pursued and aligned first, He put the other relationship, the seemingly unfixable one, back together, as only He can.

  • We can clean our house better, but if our relationship with God is in disarray, the clutter will show up, again, in another area, because the soul isn’t well.
  • We may learn the steps to control our tongue from the pages of a book, but if we don’t fall in love with Jesus and it becomes a deeper commitment, those steps will eventually be forgotten and we will default to the familiar.

So many of us are weary, to the bone, of the daily grind…of trying, striving, making steps, going back, again, feeling like we can’t make the true progress we want…

So many of us say we want to walk strong and effective through this life instead of walking scared and Kingdom ineffective…

It may seem like a helpless, stale, hard place to be but it is actually the place of hope because when we come to the end of our efforts and human brave, Jesus can do what He does best and save us.

To walk Jesus Strong through this life is going to mean we are going to have to be honest with ourselves about the smokescreen issues we keep throwing up to avoid the real problem. (see Declaration 3 in Put Your Warrior Boots On: I Will Tell the Truth to Myself and Others)

Our first step to becoming a Jesus warrior? Deal with the nagging God problem within so He can make us into the warriors we are meant to be.

I’m in. How about you?
